Translation
Translators play a leading role when it comes to international trade in book rights. Kafka in Arabic, Hamsun in German, Graham Greene in Polish – all unthinkable without them. Translators give life to world literature.
But they also ensure the supply of reading material when it comes to run-of-the-mill American crime fiction or romantic novels. They find the images for idiomatic expressions and do their research on specialist topics. They translate cookery books and life guides, the handbook for managers and the how-to manual for macramé. In short, the translator becomes a specialist in everything he or she works on.
The Translators Centre at the Frankfurt Book Fair takes account of this and provides a forum for the widest range of topics involved in translating and interpreting.
Translators Centre
Since 2003, the Translators Centre has been the port of call for translators, interpreters, publishers, editors and other trade visitors who make use of translation services.
In a central location in Hall 5.0, the specialist centre and its adjoining cafeteria are open to translators and interpreters and their guests as a workplace, a contact and information venue – in close proximity to the International Centre and at the heart of world literature at the Book Fair!
A book display shows translations by translators accredited to the Translators Centre as an “Exhibition in Progress”, i.e. an exhibition that grows during the course of the Fair. The publications brought to this display also serve as documentation of the contributors’ work as translators.
Here you find organisations that offer translators and publishing houses programmes for the promotion of translation.
