Programme for Literary Translators
Every year, the Georges-Arthur Goldschmidt Programme for young literary translators gives five German and five French up-and-coming translators the chance to get to know publishing companies in the two countries and to work on translation projects under the guidance of experienced translators.
This bursary programme is organised jointly by the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Deutsch- Französischen Jugendwerk (DFJW) and the Bureau International de l’Édition Française (BIEF).
- Introductory seminars in Paris and Berlin
- Visits to French and German publishing companies
- Translation workshops at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin (LCB) and at the Collège International des Traducteurs Littéraires (CITL) in Arles
- Reading and evaluation in Arles
The Translators Centre at the Frankfurt Book Fair always hosts a reading and a get-together of past participants in the Goldschmidt Programme.
The funding for the Goldschmidt Programme is provided by the Deutsch-Französische Jugendwerk in accordance with its guidelines.
Participants receive a monthly grant of 900 euros. Travel expenses to the various programme venues are paid for in part. Any costs incurred over and above this must be met by the participants themselves.
- Upper age limit: 30 years old (in exceptional cases: 35)
- University degree (e.g. literary translation course at Düsseldorf University or similar) and/or a literary translation already published
- Availability for the entire duration of the programme (January to March)
Applications are to be submitted to the Frankfurt Book Fair by 31 July each year.
The following items must be included with the application:
- CV
- Application letter
- Description of the translation project (approx. one page)
- Short sample translation together with the relevant original text (maximum 5 pages)
- If applicable, extract from an already published literary translation from French, together with the relevant original text. Translations from languages other than French cannot be taken into consideration.
The translation project is the French-language text that the applicant would probably like to translate during the workshop. The rights for the selected text must not yet have been sold to Germany. The applicant must ensure that the chosen author does not yet have an established German translator.
