German-French Exchange Programme for Young Booksellers & Publishing Employees

Every year, this programme for young booksellers and publishing professionals arranges for 20 participants from Germany and France to spend three months on work experience in a publishing company, a bookshop or literary agency in their neighbouring country.

The participants from both countries are given the opportunity to find out more from their own personal experience about the literature, publishing industry and book trade in the neighbouring country .

The DFJW and the Frankfurt Book Fair (International Department) are responsible for the organisation and running of the programme, in cooperation with the Börsenverein des deutschen Buchhandels e.V., and the Bureau International de l’Edition Française (BIEF), Paris.

Programme schedule (March to June)
  • March: intercultural preparatory seminar in Marly-le-Roi (near Paris) and in the Schulen des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Book Trade Academies) in Frankfurt/Seckbach.
  • April-June: work experience in a bookshop, a publishing company or with a literary agency in France.
  • End June: evaluation seminar in Frankfurt or Paris.
  • A work experience report must be sent to the organisers at the latest a week after the programme ends.
Funding

The programme is funded by the Deutsch-Französisches Jugendwerk (DFJW:

  • During their work experience, participants receive a monthly grant of approx. € 900.
  • A lump-sum travel allowance is given for travel to the various programme locations.
  • During the introductory seminar in March, the participants are provided with acommodation and meals at the Schulen des Deutschen Buchhandels (German Book Trade Academies) in Frankfurt/Seckbach and at the conference centre in Marly-le-Roi.
